Last week, we tragically lost Gloria to an unsafe abortion. She was so young and full of promise, and like many others, she found herself with no safe options when she needed care.
Her death is not just a heart-wrenching loss; it highlights a system that continues to let down girls and women in Uganda. Our laws are still unclear and restrictive, allowing abortion only to save a woman’s life. Yet, even in those dire situations, fear of prosecution, stigma, and a culture of silence prevent access to the care that is desperately needed.
The outcome? More lives lost in secrecy and shame. We can change this reality. We must advocate for legal clarity that safeguards both healthcare providers and the young women they care for.
Comprehensive Sexuality Education is essential so that girls can understand their bodies and know their rights.
We need to invest in and strengthen youth-friendly services that are safe, confidential, and free from judgment.
It is vital that our leaders—policymakers, religious and cultural authorities, and community voices step up with courage and compassion instead of retreating into silence.
Gloria’s death is a profound loss that should never have happened. Let us honor her by turning our grief into action. Safe abortion is healthcare, and every girl deserves the chance to live not be lost to our fears and inaction.
