Our Story: Why We Exist
Our founding was inspired by the painful, real-life experience of young women in Ugandan universities—places presumed to be centers of empowerment, yet plagued by silence around sexual and reproductive health.
Stories like Haven’s remind us that behind every statistic is a life forever changed by neglect, misinformation, or violence. Haven coming from a devoutly religious background, she had never been taught about contraception — it was something reserved for married women, she was told. When she discovered she was pregnant, she felt trapped.
Her options were heartbreaking: drop out of university, be disowned by her family, or seek a termination under dangerous circumstances.
With nowhere to turn, Haven confided in friends who took her to a traditional birth attendant. There, she was given herbal remedies to terminate the pregnancy. The procedure was unsafe. She bled severely, developed sepsis, and was rushed to the hospital for emergency post-abortion care. She survived — but lost her uterus. Her future, both physically and emotionally, was changed forever.
Voices was created to ensure that no girl or woman is left to suffer in silence again.
