Wakiso, Uganda — Voices for Health and Development (Voices), a youth-led organization promoting girls’ rights in health and development, has launched the My Choice Campaign at Nkumba University. This youth-driven initiative aims to expand access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and services for young people, with a focus on university girls across Uganda.
Young people in Uganda face significant barriers to accessing accurate SRHR information and youth-friendly services. National data shows that nearly one in four girls aged 15–19 has begun childbearing, underscoring ongoing gaps in knowledge, services, and support. These challenges lead to unintended pregnancies, interrupted education, and reduced opportunities for young women.
Maternal health risks remain urgent. Unsafe abortion significantly contributes to maternal illness and death, especially among young women. Adolescent girls and young women also experience higher rates of HIV than their male peers, reflecting persistent gender inequalities.
The My Choice Campaign addresses these gaps with a youth-centered approach to SRHR information and services. Co-designed with university girls and informed by their experiences, the campaign uses digital platforms, peer-led infocafes, and direct referral pathways to ensure young people access accurate information and support. By creating safe spaces, amplifying relatable voices, and connecting girls to youth-friendly services, the campaign empowers them to make informed choices and challenges the stigma and barriers affecting their wellbeing.
“Too many young people are forced to make life-changing decisions without accurate information, safe spaces, or support,” said Ms. Mahoro Rose, Team Lead at Voices for Health and Development. “My Choice is about putting power back in the hands of young people, equipping them with the knowledge, confidence, and connections to make informed choices about their bodies and their futures, free from fear or judgment.”
Voices for Health and Development calls on media, civil society organizations, development partners, and young people to support and amplify the My Choice Campaign. The organization invites the public to share stories, join campaign discussions, and advocate for policies and investments that prioritize young people’s health, dignity, and agency.
