VOICES for Health and Development took part in a two-day workshop hosted by Farm Radio International (FRI) on February 6-7, 2025, at the Eureka Place Hotel in Ntinda. The workshop aimed to discuss nature-based solutions to climate change issues in the Teso, Buganda, and Lango regions.
During the event, The Team Leader, VOICES and other participants shared the serious impact of flooding in Katakwi District. Many people in the Gweri-Magoro-Ngariam-Palam belt have had to leave their homes after floods destroyed their farms and houses, with some lives lost. Activities like sand mining and deforestation have made the flooding even worse.
As part of the workshop, VOICES was invited to take part in FRI’s upcoming radio programs. These programs will focus on climate change adaptation interventions and important conversations such as how climate change affects women and girls, as well as its impact on health and gender-based violence.
Esther Juliet Apio, the Team Leader at VOICES, stressed the need to involve children in climate change efforts. “The work communities are doing to address environmental issues is impressive. However, if children are involved in these efforts, we can build a generation that cares about climate change and protecting nature,” said Apio.
In the coming months, VOICES plans to increase its work to empower rural women and girls, including encouraging them to participate in climate action projects at schools.
The workshop was also attended by representatives from the National Forestry Authority, Ministry of Water and Environment, WOUGNET, NAWOU, Trees For Life, YLEC, and local radio stations.
